This morning, exiting the train off to Palo Alto's University Ave., I spotted a guy with a yuppie buzz cut and a Facebook bag. I'll admit I was a little revolted when I saw he was heading for the Facebook offices. He then convened at the corner with two others--all with that same bag. I had twenty minutes to spare as my ride to work was running late. So I played Studs Turkel and asked my newfound Facebook community where the nearest coffee shop was. They looked at me like I was some 40 year old lawyer with a tie and then the buzz cut told me, Go Right on Ramona Street and you'll see it. I initially felt they were concerned they had not "friended" me prior to the exchange - I had violated some modern non-virtual world code. Or maybe it was the other way around--Their friendliness was not more evident than the blank expression reflected in their computer screens. I had experienced the ultimate superficial encounter--the kind reserved for Facebook itself. Their blank look, a manifestation of the virtual experience.
